The Kenwood, 5101 River Road, Unit 1814, Bethesda, MD 20816
Welcome to a superbly and thoroughly restated upscale home at The Kenwood. The living areas of this condo were professionally redesigned, replacing all surfaces, installations, appliances, and electrical fittings. The creation is a one-of-a-kind, elegant, and ultra-efficient marriage of design and function.
The owner of this condo commissioned the architectural firm ColePrévost to assess and redesign this unit with top quality materials and features.
The walls were sanded, old crown molding was removed, and new crown molding was milled and fitted. All wall electrical outlets were replaced, new ones were added, and new covers were installed on all.
The old parquet flooring and 300 lbs. of black wood glue was removed. The charcoal-stained red oak plank flooring made by Mirage Floors, custom stained at the factory and installed on a new subfloor, gracefully unifies all the living and sleeping areas and the kitchen.
The existing five closets had complete make overs and a sixth closet was added. Each now has interior lighting and four have electrical outlets in them as well. Three closets are in the master bedroom, one is in the second bedroom, one is in the center hall, a coat closet is in the foyer area — and a new closet was added near the piano in the dining room (the “Nancy Drew” closet, with a hidden door).
The closets accommodate clothes, linens, a printer and other office items, and in the center hall closet (“the garage closet”) all manner of things usually found in a garage including luggage, tools, cleaning supplies, and a vacuum cleaner. Top-of-the-line built-ins and adjustable organizing systems envisioned by Courtenay Hamilton of Corganized LLC were installed in all of the closets for maximum efficiency. The organizing systems of five of the six closets can be reconfigured to suit the buyer’s specific needs.
The kitchen was expanded—it may well be the largest kitchen in the building. At the same time, the dining area was preserved and can still seat between ten and twelve for dinner.
The kitchen has been fitted with Poliform advanced cabinetry and hardware from Italy. The cabinets have integrated pull out drawers and custom inserts for ease of access and to utilize all available storage space, especially in corner cupboards. The Dekton counter tops and back splash are highly durable manufactured stone — resistant to stains, scratches, abrasion, fire, heat, freezing, thawing, zero water absorption, fireproof, color-stable. The sink faucet is by Dornbracht.
All kitchen fixtures are smartly incorporated in sleek custom Poliform cabinetry. A lighting consultant configured the under-cabinet lighting and overhead lighting systems so as to minimize and eliminate shadows and dark spaces – “shadowless lighting.”
The high-end fixtures include Miele dishwasher, Miele 4-burner gas stove, a Miele exhaust fan, Miele double wall ovens, and a Sub-Zero 36” wide oversized refrigerator. A separate Sub-Zero freezer and automatic icemaker is housed in two under-counter drawers to the right of the sink.
There are three ovens in the kitchen. A GE microwave oven is in a cabinet is next to the refrigerator. Of the two Miele wall ovens, the lower is an oven with convection features, and the upper oven is a “combi-steam” oven. It bakes, broils, steams, with convection as an option, is programmable for a combination of all settings and is very easy to use.
The Poliform bookshelves in the second bedroom can be detached from the wall by Poliform’s Georgetown studio (the bookshelves have their own backing) and moved to different locations.
Finally, a dedicated Clipper Creek high-speed electric vehicle charging station has been installed at the parking space and conveys with the unit. The charger can fully charge a Tesla overnight or a hybrid electric car in less than three hours.
All in all, this effort has been described as “the most impressive improvements ever made in a Kenwood condominium.” All work was completed in 2019.
